IRONMAN Wales 2026 race-week guide: Tenby travel and logistics
Last chance — race day is in 1 day.
Stay in Tenby
Dates: 11-14 Sept. Compare 2 curated zones and distance to start.
Race-week recheck required. This is an operating guide for an athlete and travel planner, not a sightseeing itinerary. The organiser states that the schedule is subject to change. Recheck the official athlete communications and linked documents before travel and again during race week.
Direct answer
IRONMAN Wales is on Sunday 13 September 2026 in Tenby. Plan around several separate race sites: registration and expo at Five Arches, transition at Seafront Car Park, the swim and start at North Beach, and finish activity at The Esplanade. Arrive by Thursday if possible, complete registration early, keep Saturday clear for bike and bag check-in (09:00–16:00), and protect Sunday morning’s transition window (05:30–07:00) ahead of the 07:30 age-group rolling start.
The central travel decision is not simply “car or train.” It is whether the whole party can move the athlete, bike case, race bags and normal luggage through the final leg without depending on restricted race-day road access. Tenby has a railway station, but Transport for Wales says cycle spaces are limited and reservations may be required depending on the service; verify every booked train, including connections, for the exact date, departure and bike format. If driving, treat the race-day access plan as a hard operating constraint: the official road leaflet describes temporary closures and no access into Tenby from 11:00 to 15:00, with pedestrian crossing only when marshals judge it safe. The leaflet identifies the A477, A40 and A4076 as unaffected detour routes.
Do not make a flight choice from airport name or map distance alone. The official race directions page lists Cardiff Airport as the closest option, at around 100 miles, and Bristol Airport as another option, at around 135 miles. That is not a complete transfer recommendation: compare currently bookable end-to-end itineraries, including the final leg and bike-luggage rules. Swansea Airport (SWS) should not be used as a scheduled-flight gateway recommendation. No airport is designated “best” in this guide.
Verified venue and timing table
The following is transcribed from the official 2026 event schedule and registration page. All times are local. The organiser may change the programme.
| Item | Date and time | Venue | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Race day | Sun 13 Sep 2026 | Tenby | Build every booking around this confirmed event date. |
| Registration / expo | Consult current official schedule for session times | Five Arches | Complete registration before its final available session; do not infer hours from a previous year. |
| Bike and bag check-in | Sat 12 Sep, 09:00–16:00 | Transition, Seafront Car Park | Reserve a weather- and queue-tolerant Saturday window; take the required bike, bags and credentials. |
| Race-morning transition access | Sun 13 Sep, 05:30–07:00 | Seafront Car Park | Work backward from the closing time, not the start time; pre-plan the walk from the accommodation. |
| Swim / race start | Sun 13 Sep, age-group rolling start 07:30 | North Beach | Athlete and supporter routes may diverge; agree a meeting protocol before entering the start area. |
| Finish activity | Sun 13 Sep | The Esplanade | Use this as the post-finish rendezvous area, subject to organiser controls on the day. |
| Bike and bag collection | Sun 13 Sep, 18:45–01:00 | Transition, Seafront Car Park | Nominate who will collect, know what authorisation is required, and allow for a collection after midnight. |
| Finish-line party | Sun 13 Sep, 22:00–00:50 | Finish area, The Esplanade | Supporters should plan for a late finish and avoid a transport plan that expires before the party ends. |
Thursday-to-Monday operating plan
Thursday 10 September — arrive and remove uncertainty
Athlete
- Reach the accommodation with enough time to inspect the bike after transit rather than discovering damage on Saturday.
- Confirm the walk between the accommodation, Five Arches, Seafront Car Park, North Beach and The Esplanade using the actual entrances and any barriers already in place.
- Separate registration documents, race kit, bike tools and everyday luggage.
Travel planner / supporter
- Confirm the return journey, bike reservation or vehicle arrangements and accommodation checkout terms.
- Identify the exact official communication channels to monitor for schedule and access changes.
- Establish one primary and one fallback rendezvous point outside controlled race areas.
- Buy core breakfast, hydration and simple post-race food now rather than relying on race-day availability.
Friday 11 September — register and stabilize the plan
Athlete
- Use an official registration session at Five Arches; check the current schedule for the applicable opening time and required identification or licence documents.
- Read the issued athlete material before packing bags. Treat it as controlling if it differs from this planning draft.
- Complete only a short equipment check that does not create avoidable mechanical risk.
Travel planner / supporter
- Reconfirm Saturday check-in access and Sunday walking routes.
- Check train status, road notices and the event’s latest athlete update.
- If using a vehicle, decide where it will remain before road controls begin; do not assume accommodation parking includes unrestricted movement.
Joint decision gate
- Resolve any bike fault, missing nutrition or registration issue on Friday. Do not defer an avoidable problem to the Saturday check-in window.
Saturday 12 September — check in, then stop moving parts
Athlete
- Check the bike and required bags into transition at Seafront Car Park between 09:00 and 16:00.
- Before leaving transition, verify the rack location, bag process, permitted race-morning additions and route back to the accommodation.
- Lay out timing chip or required credentials, swim kit, warm layer, nutrition and post-race items exactly as required by the current athlete instructions.
- Set alarms with a backup and protect sleep after check-in.
Travel planner / supporter
- If considering the Carew park-and-ride, verify the current Saturday/Sunday stops, operating times, capacity or booking rules, bike/luggage policy and last service. Its existence is confirmed by the access leaflet; these operating details require a race-week recheck.
- Buy remaining essentials before evening. Avoid relying on unverified late or early opening.
- Confirm who holds keys, phones, athlete tracking details and any collection authorisation.
Sunday 13 September — execute by clock and boundary
Before 05:30
- Eat the tested breakfast from supplies already in the accommodation.
- Leave by the pre-walked route with margin for controlled entrances and crowds.
- The supporter carries only items permitted by current venue rules and knows the fallback meeting point.
05:30–07:00
- Athlete accesses transition at Seafront Car Park and completes only organiser-permitted race-morning tasks.
- Exit transition before it closes. Move to North Beach according to official flow.
07:30 onward
- Age-group rolling start begins at North Beach.
- Supporters should not build a viewing plan that requires repeatedly crossing the course. Pedestrian crossing is permitted only when safe and as directed by marshals.
- Treat 11:00–15:00 no access into Tenby as a firm race-day road boundary. The road leaflet identifies temporary closures and the A477, A40 and A4076 as unaffected detour routes; use only the current signed route and marshal instructions.
- Keep a self-contained food, water, medication, charging and clothing plan. Do not assume easy vehicle retrieval during closures.
Finish and collection
- Reunite at the agreed location near, but not inside, any controlled finish flow at The Esplanade.
- Bike and bag collection is scheduled 18:45–01:00 at Seafront Car Park. Confirm athlete/representative rules in current instructions before separating.
- The finish-line party is scheduled 22:00–00:50. Anyone staying late needs a return plan that still works after midnight.
- Do not drive until safe, rested, legally fit to do so, and able to use the roads available at that time.
Monday 14 September — recover, account and depart
Before checkout
- Account for bike, wheels, transition bags, timing equipment, identification, chargers and accommodation keys.
- Inspect and repack the bike without blocking shared access.
- Check live rail or road information before leaving, including every bike reservation and connection.
- Keep recovery food, fluid, medication and a clothing change accessible rather than buried with the bike.
Departure decision
- Choose a later departure if fatigue makes the booked plan unsafe or unrealistic.
- For rail, allow for station handling and transfers with the bike; a ticket alone does not guarantee that the exact service accepts the cycle as presented.
- For road, follow current signs and official traffic information rather than assuming all temporary controls have ended.
Getting to Tenby: decision framework
Choose the plan that survives all of these questions, then document the exact itinerary.
| Decision | Rail-led plan | Road-led plan | Flight plus final leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bike handling | Is the bike accepted on every service and connection, and is a reservation required? Can the party handle it through stations? | Does the bike travel securely with all passengers and luggage? Where can it stay without needing race-day vehicle movement? | What are the airline’s current bike rules, booking steps and disruption options? Does the onward rail or vehicle leg also accept it? |
| Arrival resilience | Is there an earlier viable service if a connection fails? | Can arrival avoid fatigue and leave time to inspect the bike? | Is there enough buffer for a delayed flight, oversized-baggage delivery and the final transfer? |
| Race-week movement | Can everyone walk from Tenby station or use a pre-confirmed onward arrangement? | Can the vehicle remain stationary through temporary closures and the 11:00–15:00 Sunday access boundary? | Does the final leg work without assuming an unverified airport transfer or unrestricted Tenby road access? |
| Departure | Does the exact Monday service permit the bike, and are all changes manageable post-race? | Is the driver genuinely rested and outside any remaining controls? | Is the return schedule compatible with post-race fatigue, bike repacking and baggage check-in? |
| Evidence to retain | Tickets, cycle reservations, operator confirmation and disruption options | Parking permission, current road leaflet and alternate signed approach | Flight booking, current sports-equipment acceptance, final-leg booking and fallback |
Rail and bike-carriage caveats
- Tenby station exists, but that fact does not establish frequency, a direct route, staffing, step-free handling or cycle capacity for a particular journey.
- Transport for Wales states that bike spaces are limited and that reservations may be required depending on the service.
- Verify the exact train—not merely the route—for both directions and every connection. Confirm whether the operator treats an assembled bike, folded bike or boxed bike differently.
- Retain reservation evidence and operator instructions. Recheck before departure because timetable, train formation and disruption can change.
- Test whether the athlete and companion can physically manage bike, race bags and luggage during each transfer. If not, change the itinerary rather than assuming help will be available.
Road-access boundaries
- The official 2026 access leaflet describes temporary road closures.
- It states no access into Tenby from 11:00 to 15:00 on race day.
- Pedestrians may cross only when it is safe and marshals permit it. No itinerary should depend on crossing at an exact time.
- The leaflet identifies the A477, A40 and A4076 as unaffected detour routes. This is not a promise that every local approach, junction, car park or property remains accessible.
- A Carew park-and-ride operates Saturday and Sunday, but stops, times, capacity or reservation arrangements and what can be carried must be rechecked during race week.
- Follow the current leaflet, temporary signs, marshals and emergency-service directions over this guide.
Airports: evidence required before choosing
For any proposed airport, compare a live, bookable itinerary for the actual party and dates:
- Flight schedule and disruption recovery;
- airline bike acceptance and required advance booking;
- oversized-baggage handoff time;
- onward rail or vehicle availability with the bike;
- arrival before registration and Saturday check-in obligations;
- post-race departure margin and driver fatigue; and
- a fallback that does not depend on unverified transfer or parking availability.
This guide does not name a “best” airport. Do not recommend Swansea Airport (SWS) as a scheduled-flight gateway.
Where to stay: area decision framework
These are trade-offs, not rankings. No distance, price, availability or parking claim is implied. Check the exact property address against current controlled-area maps and the athlete’s ability to walk with equipment.
Tenby Old Town / Seafront
Choose when: the priority is reaching the central race venues on foot and the group accepts a busier event footprint.
Confirm before booking:
- the exact walking route to Five Arches, Seafront Car Park, North Beach and The Esplanade;
- whether steps, gradients, barriers or controlled zones affect the athlete or luggage;
- vehicle arrival, unloading and departure rules during temporary closures;
- secure bike storage and whether the bike may be taken through shared areas;
- noise, minimum-stay, cancellation and late-return arrangements.
Upper Tenby / outskirts
Choose when: the party is comfortable trading immediate venue proximity for a location outside the most central streets.
Confirm before booking:
- the athlete’s realistic race-morning walking route without relying on a car;
- gradients, lighting and access after the finish;
- whether the address is inside any temporary traffic control;
- secure bike storage, cooking facilities and checkout arrangements;
- the supporter's independent route if athlete and supporter separate.
Penally
Choose when: the group can validate a dependable Tenby connection or a walk that remains acceptable before dawn and after the race.
Confirm before booking:
- the exact door-to-transition plan at race-morning hours;
- the late-night return after bike collection or finish activity;
- whether any proposed rail, shuttle, taxi or vehicle movement is actually operating when needed;
- local road controls and pedestrian routing;
- secure bike storage and food-preparation capability.
Saundersfoot
Choose when: the group is prepared to solve the race-day transfer explicitly rather than treating it as an incidental journey.
Confirm before booking:
- a transport or walking plan that respects closures and does not require access into Tenby from 11:00 to 15:00;
- how the athlete reaches transition before 07:00 without an unverified service;
- how supporters return after finish activity and how the bike and bags are collected by 01:00;
- current public-transport bike acceptance, if relevant;
- secure bike storage, cancellation terms and the actual property access plan.

Food and supplies plan
Do not rely on assumed opening hours, race-day walk-in capacity or an unfamiliar pre-race menu.
Accommodation capability
- Confirm refrigeration, food-preparation equipment, drinking-water access and any restrictions on cooking or bike storage.
- If breakfast is included, ask whether the service time works before race-morning departure; otherwise plan a self-catered tested breakfast.
Buy by Thursday or Friday
- familiar race breakfast and snacks;
- tested race nutrition not guaranteed by organiser provision;
- hydration products;
- simple pre-race meals and post-race food;
- any required medication and basic personal supplies; and
- food for supporters during access restrictions.
Carry on Sunday
- Athlete: only organiser-permitted items, packed according to current bag rules.
- Supporter: water, food, medication, power bank, warm/dry layer as individually required, and the written rendezvous plan.
Do not assume
- that a grocer, café, restaurant, pharmacy or takeaway will open at a particular time;
- that a venue will accept a large group without a booking;
- that a car can be used for a mid-race supply run; or
- that on-course products replace testing and personal nutrition planning.

Bike logistics and getting to the start
Where you stay decides your race morning. Moving a bike on tired, nervous legs is no fun, so the closer you are to transition the calmer the start — from a nearby hotel you can walk back for anything you forget; further out you’re relying on a lift or a taxi in the pre-dawn dark.
We don’t have measured hotel-to-start distances for this race yet, so check the course map before you book — staying near transition is worth a lot on race morning.
Check the official IRONMAN athlete guide for this race’s transition opening times, the bike racking schedule, and race-morning transport — any race shuttle and where you can park near T1.
Race morning timeline
Start times move year to year and by swim wave, so we won’t print a schedule that might be wrong. Here’s the shape of a typical morning — work every step back from your own wave start time, and confirm the exact transition times in the athlete guide.
- ~3 hours before your start — wake up, eat your usual pre-race breakfast
- ~2 hours before — leave for transition (walk if you’re close, taxi if not)
- ~90 minutes before — final bike check: tyres, brakes, nutrition, bottles
- ~45 minutes before — wetsuit on, bag dropped, head to the swim start
- ~15 minutes before — short warm-up, find your seeded pen
- Your wave — go
Check the official athlete guide for this year’s exact transition opening and closing times and your wave start.
Supporter guide
The two spots you can count on at any IRONMAN are the swim exit early on and the finish chute at the end — and the finish is the moment worth building the day around. In between, mid-pack athletes can be out on the bike and run for hours, so expect long gaps: bring layers, snacks, cash and a phone battery pack.
A rough guide to when your athlete will finish: add their swim, bike and run estimates plus 10–15 minutes for the two transitions, then count forward from their wave start. Get to the finish line well before your earliest guess — the queue of emotion there is the whole point of the trip.
For this race’s best spectator points, course access and whether you need to book parking, check the course maps and spectator information in the official athlete guide.
Local tips
- Money: you’ll spend in GBP (£). 10% in restaurants if service not included.
- Water: Tap water is safe to drink — worth knowing when you’re hydrating hard the day before.
- Power: plug type G, 230V / 50Hz. Pack the right adapter for your bike computer and lights.
- In an emergency: dial 999 / 112.
Race-village details — bag drop, the expo and packet pickup — are set out in the official athlete guide.
