IRONMAN Wales 2026 race-week checklist and packing list
A 100-item interactive IRONMAN Wales checklist for Tenby race week, from registration and bike check-in to North Beach, The Esplanade and post-race collection.
Your Wales checklist
0 of 100 items complete
For a trained age-group athlete racing in Tenby on Sunday 13 September 2026. Use this as a calm decision list, not a substitute for the final athlete guide, event briefings, venue signs, or instructions from race officials.
RACE-WEEK RECHECK
The schedule and access arrangements are subject to change. Reopen the official schedule and road-access leaflet during race week. Confirm registration hours, briefings, check-in windows, transition access, start procedure, road restrictions, park-and-ride details, and collection arrangements before acting on this checklist.
Before race week — lock the plan
- Confirm the registration entry shows the correct athlete name, age group, and race: IRONMAN Wales on Sun 13 Sep 2026.
- Save the registration confirmation somewhere available offline.
- Check the official schedule PDF for any revision since it was downloaded.
- Check whether a final athlete guide or mandatory athlete communication has been issued, and read it in full.
- Record any briefing or appointment that applies to this entry rather than assuming another athlete's time applies.
- Put the named venues into the trip plan: Five Arches for registration/expo, Seafront Car Park for transition, North Beach for swim/start, and The Esplanade for finish activity.
- Choose accommodation-to-venue routes that remain workable on foot if vehicle movement is restricted.
- Decide who holds room keys, phone, money, and warm layers while the athlete is racing.
- Give supporters one primary meeting point and one backup point away from the busiest finish flow.
- Agree what supporters should do if mobile service is slow or messages are delayed.
- Review the latest official equipment rules and resolve any bike, helmet, wetsuit, apparel, or nutrition uncertainty before travelling.
- Check bike condition under load: brakes, shifting, tyres, fasteners, hydration mounts, and repair setup.
- Make a deliberate race-fuelling plan with quantities and timing that have already been tolerated in training.
- Put photo ID, required registration evidence, medical information, and emergency-contact details together for race week.
Travel and Tenby access — make movement resilient
- Check the journey against the official road-access leaflet, including temporary closures in Tenby and surrounding communities.
- Plan around no access into Tenby from 11:00–15:00 where the official leaflet states this restriction.
- Do not treat a pedestrian crossing point as guaranteed; cross only when and where marshals indicate it is safe.
- If driving, identify a compliant route using the leaflet's unaffected A477, A40, or A4076 detours as relevant.
- Recheck closure times on the day rather than relying on a saved screenshot.
- Allow enough margin that a closure, queue, or walking detour does not threaten registration or check-in.
- If considering Carew park-and-ride on Saturday or Sunday, recheck its current timetable before committing.
- Confirm Carew park-and-ride stops, fares, capacity information, and boarding arrangements during race week.
- Keep a non-shuttle fallback for every time-critical athlete movement.
- If travelling by rail, check the live itinerary and facilities information for Tenby station.
- If taking a bike on Transport for Wales, check the current bikes-on-board policy and make any reservation the operator requires.
- Confirm how the packed or assembled bike will move between arrival point, accommodation, and transition without relying on restricted vehicle access.
- Walk the accommodation-to-transition and accommodation-to-start approaches before race morning if practical.
- Share access constraints with supporters so their movement plan does not depend on driving through the course.
Arrival to Friday — register and reduce uncertainty
- Visit registration/expo at Five Arches within the latest official opening hours.
- Bring the identification and entry evidence specified in the latest official instructions.
- Check the issued athlete details before leaving registration and report any error immediately.
- Inventory every issued item against official instructions rather than guessing what each label, number, or bag is for.
- Ask officials at Five Arches about any unresolved check-in, bag, timing, or collection question.
- Confirm the exact Saturday route and walking time from accommodation to Seafront Car Park.
- Confirm the exact race-morning route and walking time to North Beach and transition access.
- Locate The Esplanade and agree where supporters will stand or meet without obstructing race operations.
- Inspect the bike after travel and correct transport damage or loosened components before the final short check.
- Complete only the familiar pre-race movement needed to confirm equipment and body feel; avoid adding fitness.
- Buy or organise only previously tested nutrition and hydration products needed for the race plan.
- Check the latest forecast close enough to race day to choose layers and setup, without assuming conditions in advance.
Saturday 12 September — bike and bag check-in
- Reconfirm the official bike/bag check-in window: 09:00–16:00 at Seafront Car Park, subject to change.
- Choose a check-in time that leaves recovery margin and does not depend on last-minute transport.
- Perform a final mechanical check before entering transition; solve concerns before racking.
- Set tyre pressure for the actual equipment and race-day conditions, not a copied number.
- Confirm the bike computer, electronic shifting, lights if required, and other powered equipment have sufficient charge.
- Load only familiar on-bike nutrition and secure it so it cannot interfere with steering, braking, or pedalling.
- Match the bike and all issued labels or numbers to the latest official instructions before leaving accommodation.
- Build each transition bag from the planned sequence of actions, then remove anything that creates confusion.
- Separate “must use” items from optional condition-dependent items inside each bag.
- Photograph the completed bike and bag setup for a calm visual check later.
- At check-in, note the rack position using fixed landmarks rather than relying only on row memory.
- Walk the permitted transition flow and identify bike-out, bike-in, and bag locations from official signage.
- Ask an official what can still be accessed or changed on race morning; do not assume prior-year procedures.
- After check-in, set race-morning alarms, prepare breakfast, lay out start clothing, and stop equipment tinkering.
Sunday 13 September — transition and start
- Wake with enough margin to follow the practiced breakfast and hydration plan without rushing.
- Check official event communications once for overnight schedule, access, or conditions updates.
- Reconfirm transition is scheduled for 05:30–07:00, subject to change.
- Leave accommodation using the pre-walked route and a time buffer that does not depend on vehicle access.
- Carry only the race-morning items allowed by the current official instructions.
- In transition, verify the bike is present, stable, and shows no overnight issue.
- Check tyres by feel or gauge and investigate a meaningful pressure loss rather than automatically topping up.
- Confirm bottles, nutrition, computer, and any permitted race-morning additions are secure.
- Confirm gearing is suitable for the first controlled pedal strokes out of transition.
- Recheck the physical route from the swim entrance to the correct bag and bike rack.
- Use toilets early enough that a queue does not compress the start routine.
- Hand supporter items to the agreed person before entering athlete-only flow.
- Complete a familiar warm-up only if conditions, timing, and officials permit it.
- Seed into the age-group rolling start using the latest official process and an honest expected swim.
- Be ready for the scheduled 07:30 age-group rolling start, while following live announcements if timing changes.
Swim — North Beach
- Report to North Beach using official signs and marshal directions, not a remembered route.
- Check live water and equipment announcements before making the final wetsuit or apparel decision.
- Secure timing equipment and swim kit exactly as required by current official instructions.
- Identify the official course markers and exit from the on-site briefing rather than assumptions.
- Start at controlled effort and create space before settling into trained race rhythm.
- Sight often enough to correct small errors early, especially when the field is busy.
- If distress or equipment trouble develops, prioritise signalling for assistance over continuing.
- On exit, orient to the marked transition flow and execute the rehearsed sequence without rushing.
Bike — execute, observe, adapt
- Mount only where officials and course markings permit.
- Use the opening kilometres to settle breathing, handling, and fuelling before chasing targets.
- Ride the trained effort plan and adjust to live conditions rather than forcing a predicted split.
- Begin familiar fuelling and hydration on the planned schedule, then track actual intake.
- Keep awareness high through settlements, junctions, descents, aid areas, and crowded sections.
- Follow live signage, marshals, and traffic management; do not infer that a road is empty or fully closed.
- Address a developing mechanical or physical problem early using practiced options and official assistance where available.
- Before bike-in, prepare for the marked dismount and mentally rehearse the transition sequence.
Run and finish — The Esplanade
- Leave transition at a deliberately controlled effort and let pace settle after the bike.
- Use the practiced run fuelling plan and adapt intake to what has already been consumed.
- Break the course into manageable checkpoints rather than projecting the entire remaining distance.
- Follow current course signage and marshal instructions at every junction or repeated section.
- Monitor effort, coordination, temperature comfort, and stomach tolerance; act early if something is deteriorating.
- Use official aid and medical support when needed rather than treating completion as more important than safety.
- Expect finish activity at The Esplanade, but use live barriers and marshal directions for the actual finish flow.
- After finishing, keep moving through the directed area and make the agreed supporter contact only when clear of operations.
Post-race — recover and collect
- Take immediate recovery food, fluid, warmth, and medical help according to need and tolerance.
- Send the agreed “finished and safe” message when able.
- Reconfirm bike/bag collection is scheduled for 18:45–01:00 Sunday night, subject to change.
- Bring whatever identification or collection evidence the latest official instructions require.
- Collect the bike and every bag from Seafront Car Park, checking contents before leaving the controlled area.
- Reconfirm the finish-line party is scheduled for 22:00–00:50 before deciding whether recovery and logistics make attendance sensible.
- Check next-day rail, bike carriage, road access, and checkout arrangements before sleeping.
