Where to stay
Bolton has a handful of distinct areas to base yourself, and the right one depends on whether you're racing, supporting, or watching the pennies. A few that stand out:
- Closest to the start line: Leigh / Pennington Flash area (about 5 km from the start, mid-range). Closest practical zone to the swim start and transition area, reducing race-morning travel stress for athletes. Trade-off: less finish-line atmosphere and more complexity for families trying to see both the swim and the central-Bolton finish.
- Best for supporters: Central Bolton (mid-range). Best all-round base for finish-line access, registration, expo, restaurants, and supporter convenience. This is the classic choice if you value atmosphere and an easy post-race walk home over being near the swim start.
- Best value: Bolton outskirts / motorway hotels (budget-friendly). Useful budget or car-based option with easier parking and often larger chain hotels. You give up the town-centre atmosphere and may still need to drive or taxi to both race venues.
A calm race week
Arrive a couple of days early if you can — it gives you time to shake off the travel, register without rushing, and drive or walk the key parts of the course. Book a hotel with a flexible cancellation policy in case your plans shift, and keep race-morning logistics simple: the shorter the journey from your bed to the start, the better you'll sleep.
